Pool Service Broward County FL │Pool Repair Broward County FL

Most pool owners suffer from the common misconception that you only need to keep your water clean and add disinfecting chemicals to it to keep your pool operating properly. Unfortunately, it’s not that simple. Even if the pool water looks outwardly pristine, it can still make your family sick. Here are some of the factors that you have to take care of to keep your pool safe.

Pool Service – Factors to Consider

pH. This measures how alkaline or acidic your water is, and ranges from zero to fourteen, with 7 as a neutral measure. Unbalanced pH level can cause swimmers to experience symptoms such as itchiness and eye irritation, as well as interfering with the sanitizing effect of chlorine. The factors that can affect your water’s pH balance include heavy bathing loads, heavy rain and chemical buildup.

Total Alkalinity. TA measures hydroxides, bi-carbonates and carbonate levels in your water. If the TA level is too low, it can cause the surface of your swimming pool to erode. In addition, an unbalanced TA can also affect pH levels when chemicals are added, an effect that is known as pH bounce.

Total Dissolved Solids (TDS). TDS measures the amount of soluble substances in your pool water and is taken by assessing its electric conductivity. A high TDS value can result in problems such as hard water, scaling, salty tasting water, and staining of the pool walls and floor.

Saturation Index. This determines how corrosive your water is to your pool surfaces. If the water is over-saturated, it is corrosive and can cause staining, etching and dissolving of your pool’s walls and floor, as well as the plumbing and grouting. If the water is under-saturated, on the other hand, it can cause scaling as excess minerals, mostly calcium, will be deposited on the pool surfaces.

There are also physical factors that can affect the integrity of your pool, such as

  • The surface of your plaster becoming discolored, cracked, or rough in texture over time.
  • Deck-o-seal joints on your tile and deck coping degrading due to lack of proper care.
  • Leaks that can damage your pool’s motor.
